A couple weeks back, I introduced a story of finding God on the wings of a brown pelican. The story does not end with the Sunday School kid, who in seeing God in all things, pictured the divine as a waterbird. In the 1960s and 1970s, the endangered pelicans were saved, in substantial part, because of an environmental prophet, Rachel Carson. Her Silent Spring sold 2-million copies and is credited with starting the environmental movement.
Like other prophets, she was demonized. Only later was her contribution to ecology recognized.
These parts of the story are published in my new blog, "Letters from an Elder," on Medium, the online magazine. You can view them here. Please sign up on Medium. It's free for the basic service. I will send you a notice when new things are published.
Thanks,
