Annual Interfaith Exchange with Temple Beth Israel January 29 and February 5

For over 30 years, Claremont Presbyterian Church and Temple Beth Israel have nurtured interfaith friendship and understanding through an annual exchange between our two congregations. This year Rabbi Jonathan Kupetz, Cantor Paul Buch and members of the Temple will join our worship service on Sunday, January 29. On Friday evening, February 5, Pastor Karen Sapio will preach at Temple Beth Israel. Pastor Rocky Supinger will participate in leading the service as well and all members and friends of CPC are invited to attend. Look for more details in the bulletin as January progresses.

Jazz Sunday, November 19

Can’t get to New Orleans for Mardi Gras? Experience Dixieland Jazz in our Sunday worship service on February 19. Once again CPC musician Chet Jaeger and his band of Nightblooming Jazzmen will lift our spirits with their unique blend of tunes and inspiration. This is a great Sunday to invite friends to join you at church.

30 Hour Famine Is Back

Claremont youth will band together to protest hunger on February 24 and 25 as they fast for a day as part of World Vision’s 30 Hour Famine. Prior to the fast, students will be raising awareness about global hunger and raising funds to combat it. Then, beginning at 6:00 p.m. on the 24th, those students will spend a grueling 24 hour period together learning about the dynamics of hunger, sleeping in the church, writing letters, and working for change, all while drinking plenty of fluids.

You can be part of this effort by designating contributions to "30 Hour Famine." You can also take part in Saturday morning’s Offering of Letters. Come to the Fellowship Hall at 10:00 a.m. and write letters to Congress advocating for social programs for the poor and hungry.

Book Review and Tea - Feb. 11

Presbyterian Women of CPC welcome you to our 12th annual book review by Elaine Walker, Saturday, February 11, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. in Fellowship Hall. In keeping with the austerity of the setting of our book, WWII Great Britain and specifically the Isle of Guernsey, tea will be simple, and a table donation of $10.00 is suggested. Seating will be open (unless you make a reservation for a table of 8 by calling Elsie Harber (909) 621-2166).

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows consists of letters that "shed light on the suffering of the Channel Islanders during the German occupation, but there is also a rich vein of humor. After (Juliet) moves to Guernsey to work on her book, she finds it impossible to leave the island and her new friends, a feeling readers may share when they finish this delightful novel." The Boston Globe.

We are hoping to have a letter from our own Ann McIntyre in Scotland, recalling the life of wartime Britain, and we are still hoping for an historian of the Guernsey period. But Elaine will be dazzling as usual, helping us to thread our way through this correspondence and to find the enduring spirit of the times.

Souper Bowl of Caring - Feb. 5

On the day when football’s last two teams square off for ultimate victory, CPC will join with churches and community groups all over the country to defeat hunger. By bringing with you to church that Sunday extra dollar bills to drop into the large soup kettles that CPC youth will be managing, you can be part of that Super cause. All of the money collected at CPC’s Souper Bowl of Caring goes directly to the Beta Center food pantry in Pomona to provide food for hungry people. Game on.

Annual Meeting

The Annual Meeting of the Congregation will be held Sunday, February 5, 2012 following worship. Reports of the church’s life in 2011 as well as a budget for 2012 will be presented. Please plan to be there.

Conscientious Projector

Conscientious Projector is a monthly gathering of mindful, passionate people coming together to screen documentaries about important current justice issues, and to discuss these viewpoints from a variety of perspectives. Screenings are free to the public, just bring an open mind and a desire to discuss! Screenings in Claremont are at 7:00 p.m. on the third Wednesday of the month at the Claremont Forum, 586 W. First Street (in the old packing house.)

CD Players and Sermons

Do you have a small CD player gathering dust since you upgraded to an iPod? Bill Brinegar has copied sermons found on the CPC website to CD by month. The Deacons are making these CDs available to those unable to regularly attend services. For those who do not have a CD player, we hope to give new life to one you wish to donate. Please bring it to the church office.

Miss a Sunday, want to share a sermon with a friend, or want to upload sermons to your iPod to enjoy on your walk or commute? The sermon CDs are available to everyone and can be picked up in the church office.

Sacred Harp Singing Learner's Group

The fourth Sunday of every month you have the opportunity to learn more about his unique tradition of a cappella singing. Absolute beginners are welcome as well as those with some experience with shape note singing.

Bring a friend and a salad to share for a casual potluck after the singing.

There is a suggested donation of $5.00 per person to help cover the cost of dinner. Please RSVP to Krista if you plan to join us for fun and games in February. You can reach Krista at krista@claremontpres.org.

CPCC Fundraiser

The second Monday of each month the Claremont Presbyterian Children’s Center has a fundraiser at the El Ranchero Restaurant on Foothill Boulevard in Claremont. On Monday, February 13 from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. eat at El Ranchero Restaurant and tell them you are with the Claremont Presbyterian Children’s Center. The center will receive a portion of the proceeds and you will enjoy a delicious Mexican meal. If you prefer to eat at home you may get your food to go.

Thank you for your support!

Beautiful Flowers

Beautiful flowers are displayed on the chancel weekly. Each bouquet adds glorious color throughout our services as we celebrate God’s presence. For many years Pam House has seen to the creation and placement of bouquets that honor and remember loved ones in our congregation. She has supervised the Christmas poinsettia and Easter lily donations and their displays that everyone looks forward to at these special times in the church. Now Pam has decided to step down and pass the Flower Committee on to Kim Brinegar. We are grateful to Pam for her service that brought everyone colorful joy for countless Sundays!

If you would like to donate flowers for Sunday worship, a Flower Donation Sheet is included in this issue of the Communicator and a calendar will be on display in the Narthex in early January. Please consider selecting a Sunday to honor or remember a loved one, a wedding, anniversary or treasured event. Your flower donation is a tax deductible donation to CPC and will be included on your Giving Sheet. If you have any questions, please call the church office at (909) 624-9693.

Fairly Traded Coffee

The coffee served on the patio following worship each Sunday is Fair Trade coffee purchased from Equal Exchange.
