The Great Escape Weekend Memorial Weekend May 29 - 31, 2010 Join family and friends from CPC for rest, relaxation, and rejuvenation in the Santa Ynez Mountains at the beautiful Rancho La Sherpa Conference Center. Just a two-hour drive up the coast, the conference center is located 15 miles north of Santa Barbara in the Los Padres National Forest, overlooking the Channel Islands and the Central Coast. The grounds are large and inviting and offer many things to do, or not. The cabins are comfy and warm and easily accessible. The food is prepared for you, and you are welcome to spend time as you wish. There is a High Ropes course that is available for an additional fee, if you wish to challenge yourself physically. The cost is $133.50 a person ($9 less for kids ages 4-9 and those under 3 are free.) This includes 2 nights lodging and six meals. We are accepting payments between now and May. There is limited scholarship money available. We have eight families signed up for the weekend. Please consider coming too! Visit the website for more information: http://www.pccci.org Women's Bible Study Are you a woman yearning for a group to share your spiritual journey? Are you interested in discovering where the joys and struggles of your life intersect with the Bible’s story? This may be the small group for you! Sunday, May 31 at 7:00 p.m. we will meet at the home of Pastor Karen Sapio to begin a study of "The Psalms as a Guide to Prayer." All women are welcome. For more information, contact Pastor Karen Sapio at (909) 624-9693. Nursery Care for our Youngest Members Don’t you love watching all of those children during "Time With the Children" each week? Wouldn’t you like to get to know them better, and become one of the adults they run up to on the patio after church? Here is your opportunity to take action on the vows we make as a congregation to nurture the children who are baptized in our church. For the past several months Julie Starrett has been volunteering to staff the nursery, since Gwen Bray resigned. We would like to share that responsibility with many members of this church family, even as we thank Julie for her loving care in the nursery. Beginning Sunday, February 7, we will be staffing the nursery with two adults, along with Adam Cave, our capable Nursery Assistant. A sign-up board will be on the patio after church on Sundays, so you may choose the days you would like to help out. All volunteers will complete a Volunteer Registration Form and Background Check permission form, to comply with CPC policy.
Men's Breakfast Group The Men’s Breakfast Group invites you to join them at their weekly meetings which resume on September 2! They meet Wednesdays at Mt. San Antonio Gardens in a private dining room but take buffet breakfast in the main dining room. The time is 7:24 a.m. and the price is $8.00 per person. Parking is inside the complex just in front of the dining room in Visitor Parking spots. There is ample parking. Walking and carpooling are encouraged. Volunteer Tutors Sought Claremont After-School Programs, Inc. (CLASP) has now been in existence two years, having merged the previously successful Claremont Tutorial Centers and the Youth Wellness Center, both of which were begun in 1995 to help at-risk Claremont students with their academic needs. Last year over 150 students attended CLASP, with the help of more than 100 volunteers. Over 95% of the students qualify as low-income, and only 35% come from homes where English is the primary language.
CLASP is unique in that the after-school programs are located in neighborhoods throughout the community, bringing the program closer to the families served. The three current sites are: Claremont Village Apartments on Arrow Highway, Vista Valle Town homes on San Jose Avenue, and Foothill Mobile Park on Foothill Blvd. A fourth program site is in Fellowship Hall at Claremont Presbyterian Church, where children from throughout the school district are bused to the site and then to their homes. At CPC, students receive one-on-one tutoring and organized outdoor physical activities. There is a Claremont Unified School District certificated staff member at each site, along with a professional Site Supervisor and volunteer tutors from the community, the Claremont Colleges, and the Webb Schools. The teacher serves as a liaison with the children’s classroom teachers, acts as a mentor to volunteer tutors, and works with small groups of individuals on specific academic tasks.
Ways you can help: • Volunteer as a tutor one to three afternoons a week, or serve as a substitute • Provide supplies, educational materials, books as needed • Organize an enrichment activity • Join a CLASP Committee – Fund Raising, Program, Public Relations

Samuel was busy serving Eli. So too, when people call the church office, the phone may not be answered because the Office Manager may be occupied with other tasks in different parts of our large campus. She may be explaining our needs to the gardeners or various repair folk. The church staff has the goal of always having the office open and phones answered, but there is a need for office volunteers. The support from volunteers helps in many areas. Having the phone answered and church office covered allows the office manage mobility to move about the campus for projects, repairs, etc. Another area of support is financially. It saves the church money by not having to hire additional help to cover the front desk. There are many projects the volunteers help to complete. Without that help the church would have to pay an hourly employee to complete them. Volunteers perform such tasks as making copies, answering phones, greeting visitors and helping with mailers.
We need office coverage for:
Tuesday afternoons 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. Wednesday afternoons 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. Thursday afternoons 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
In conclusion, the Lord had to call Samuel four times before there was an answer. In order to prevent this from happening at CPC, we invite you to become an office volunteer. If you have some time and are interested, please call the office at (909) 624-9693 and speak to Joan Liebeck. Thank you!
Firm Believers I and II I would like to invite anyone who has not tried our exercise class, or who used to attend but stopped, to join us in Fellowship Hall. Firm Believers I is Monday and Thursday nights from 7:00 - 8:15 p.m. Firm Believers II is Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 7:45 - 9:00 a.m. So, what is the difference between the classes? The evening class is a little more strenuous, with a longer cardio-vascular workout, and more intense weight workouts. In the morning class we still warm-up, but do a lot of the exercises and stretches while sitting in a chair, but don’t be fooled into thinking you won’t get a workout while sitting.
Both classes begin with a warm-up to get our bodies ready to work and stretch. The evening class then proceeds to a cardio section, then on to large muscle (legs, arms, back, shoulders) usually with the aid of 2-5 pound weights. We then go down onto our mats on the floor to work our core, which are the abdominal and lower back muscles. Ending the program we do stretches and last but definitely not least (in fact many stay throughout the class just to do this part) a guided imagery and meditation. I incorporate some Yoga, Tai Chi, Pilates, and low impact aerobics to make sure we get a good workout. The morning class begins with the warm-up, making sure all major joints; necks, shoulders, hips, knees and ankles are moving. We then work on balance by standing on one foot, by walking toe-heel, or just moving from side to side transferring our weight from right to left foot. Next we go to the chairs with our 1-3 pound hand weights and we work the legs, arms, shoulders, and even do some abdominal exercises. We stretch on the chair, and then move down to the floor, on our mats to continue working legs, abdominal, and core muscles. We end in more stretching, then the guided imagery and meditation. We have a lot of laughs, and that in itself is an exercise in good health. Come join us. Bring your hand weights, exercise mat, towel and water to drink, and be ready to have fun | |
